In this refreshing approach Phil explores the main disciplines through the prism of God’s grace which empowers believers to walk in a lifestyle that resembles the disciplined lifestyle of Jesus.

The Disciplines of the Spiritual Life (4 Message Set)

This series is taught each year in the Deep End School. There have been many different approaches to teaching on the spiritual disciplines but oftentimes believers can become entangled in legalism because the disciplines were not taught through a grace paradigm. In this refreshing approach Phil explores the main disciplines through the prism of God’s grace which empowers believers to walk in a lifestyle that resembles the disciplined lifestyle of Jesus.

1. Grace Based Disciplines
God calls all of His children to live a disciplined life but not in our own strength. The lifestyle of Jesus is an expression and outworking of the life of Jesus in us. Grace empowers us to bring our lifestyle into complete alignment with the way Jesus lived His life on earth. Walking in the spiritual disciplines is an expression of the glorious grace of God in our lives.

2. The Disciplines of Abstinence
Jesus’ life was characterised by both abstinence and engagement. He abstained from certain activities in order to give Himself to a deep and intimate engagement with the Father. The rhythm of the Christian life is one of abstinence and engagement. In this lecture Phil examines the primary disciplines of abstinence; solitude, silence, fasting, simplicity and sacrifice, through the lens of the life of Jesus.

3. The Disciplines of Engagement
The disciplines of abstinence are pointless without the disciplines of engagement. We abstain from certain activities in our lives in order to more fully give ourselves to our relationship with God. In this lecture Phil explores the primary disciplines of engagement; prayer, meditation, study and worship.

4. The Discipline of Prayer and Fasting
Prayer is often associated with fasting throughout the Scriptures. This is a perfect example of the rhythm of abstinence and engagement for the advancement of the kingdom and for the growth of the believer into Christlikeness. In this final message in the series Phil highlights the divinely ordained method of personal and corporate spiritual advancement. Jesus gave Himself to a lifestyle of prayer and fasting and He calls His followers to the fasted lifestyle for the greater good of His kingdom.
